Safe mode allows you to start Windows in a basic state using limited files and drivers. This is useful in narrowing down problems you may be having for example a hardware device not functioning or boot problems. You can determine if the basic set of drivers and default settings are causing your issue or whether its a third party software.
There are several ways to start Windows 10 in safe mode. In this article I will explain three methods: Safe Mode from Settings, Safe Mode from the Sign in screen and Safe Mode from a blank screen (or restarting a PC three times)
Safe Mode from Settings
Quick Guide
Press Windows Key + I > Click Update & Security > Click Recovery > Under Advanced startup click Restart now
Step by Step Guide
1. Press the Start button, then select Settings (the gear icon) Alternatively press the Windows logo key + I on your keyboard to open Settings.
2. Select Update and Security.

3. Select Recovery, then under Advanced startup click Restart now.

4. When your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, click on Troubleshoot.

5. Click Advanced Options then click Startup Settings.

6. Click Restart.

7. When your PC restarts hit the 4 or F4 key to start in safe mode. If you need to use the internet, hit 5 or the F5 key.
Safe Mode from the Sign-in Screen
1. While on the Windows sign-in screen, press and hold the Shift key while you click power then restart

2. After the PC restarts, follow steps 4 to 5 in the preceding instructions (Sign in from Settings), i.e. Click Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart
Safe Mode from a blank screen
1. While your PC is booting up and the circling dots are visible keep your finger on the power button until the PC shuts down.

2. Start the PC again and repeat step 1
3. A message should then show Preparing Automatic Repair then Diagnosing Your PC, if not then repeat step 1 again.

4. Follow steps 4 to 5 in the Sign in from Settings procedure above i.e. Click Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart
