You may want to use your laptop like a traditional desktop where you have a large enough monitor and keyboard in front of you to achieve your computing tasks; or you may have a broken laptop screen so you have no choice but to use an external monitor. Whatever the reason this guide will explain how to achieve this task on Windows based laptops.

Using your Windows 10 or 11 laptop while closed

  1. Type Control Panel in Windows Search section on the taskbar and click Control Panel in the search results.
  1. Click Power Options in the Control Panel.
  1. Click, Choose what closing the lid does.
  1. For the last setting, “When I close the lid”, select Do nothing for Plugged in and/or On Battery, dependent on your requirements.

Note: The On battery section can be kept on Sleep or Shut Down since you can have an overheating issue if you were to close your laptop, it remains on and put it in your bag for example. This depends on your situation of course.

Conclusion

This guide showed how to use your laptop with the lid closed similar to how would use a desktop PC with an external monitor. Hope this was helpful and thanks for reading.
